Otitis externa includes all the inflammatory conditions of the auricle, external ear canal, or outer surface of the eardrum. Otitis externa can be localized, or diffuse; can be acute or chronic; and can be caused by infections, allergies, irritants or inflammatory conditions. In this case the otitis is caused by the fungus Aspergillus niger.
