Authorized in the Flood Control Act of 1946, construction on Gathright Dam began in 1974 and completed in 1979. The dam sits about 20 miles upstream from Covington, Va., on the Jackson River in Alleghany County, Va. The stilling basin is the point in which the water from Lake Moomaw passes through the intake tower and is released back into the historic path of the Jackson River.
