The Darwin mission was to consist of a flotilla of eight craft, comprising six infrared telescopes (five seen here), a central hub and a communications satellite to relay signals to Earth (not seen). The aim of the mission was to search for nearby Earth-like planets. The spacecraft were to be placed in orbit beyond the Moon at a location known as the second Lagrangian point (L2). Darwin was scrapped in 2007.
