Discoid eczema. Close-up of the hand of a patient suffering from discoid eczema. Eczema is a general term used to describe an inflammation of the skin that appears to arise without any obvious external causes. It is often referred to as endogenous or constitutional eczema. It causes itching and a red rash, often accompanied by small blisters which weep and become crusted. Endogenous eczema is classified according to its appearance & situation; the discoid type is characterized by small, well-defined areas, which are often distributed in a symmetrical pattern on the body. Skin reactions caused by external factors are termed eczematous dermatitis or simply dermatitis.
