Born in Larvik 1914. By sailing the balsa raft, Kon Tiki, from Peru to Tuamotu Island in the Pacific Ocean in 1947, he proved that the Peruvian Indians could have settled in Polynesia. He went on to make voyages in a papyrus boat, Ra II, and a reed boat, Tigris.
