The Bellshill branch of Airdrie Savings Bank, the UK's last independent savings bank, which closed in 2017 after 182 years' trading.
Airdrie Savings Bank was one of many independent savings banks which opened in the 19th century to provide banking facilities to people without wealth, but who had a little spare money to save. Most of these banks merged into the Trustee Savings Bank but ASB remained independent. It survived the 2008 banking crash but its (unpaid) trustees decided a small bank could not compete in the present day and age so decided to close it. It was always solvent.
