September, 1810, nine men appointed by the Gen-eral Association of Massachusetts as members of theAmerican Board of Commissioners of Foreign Mis-sions met in Dr. Porters study in Farmington andcompleted the organization of this first Foreign mis-sionary society in America. Governor Treadwell, amember of the Farmington church was the first presi-dent of the Board. The beautiful spire of the FarmingtonCongregational church for more than a century hasgracefully held its position at the top of praise amongall church spires of its chaste style of beauty. It isgenerally conceded to be the daintiest and most ex-quisite lined church spire in rural America.
