The Royal National Theatre, South Bank, London, England

The National Theatre contains three auditoriums - the Olivier, Lyttelton and Dorfman (previously Cottesloe) Theatres and stages over 20 productions in a year. It also includes restaurants, bars, exhibition space, free music and a bookshop. A National Theatre had been proposed as long ago as 1848 but it was not until 1951 that the first foundation stone was laid, and the Queen officially opened the building in October 1976. It was designed by Sir Denys Lasdun.
