Early spring, March 25’th 2021 A dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) picks among the ashes looking for food. The landscape has been through a much needed and controlled burn. The fire-controlled vegetation of this oak savanna has been prepared for a new season of growth. The smell of charred earth counterpoints the choir of migratory birds singing in the canopy of the ridgeline. The slopes of the ridges echo their joyous chorus. This alien landscape of brown and black will be flush with diverse and vibrant life soon.
