Scratch and bruise (image 1 of 7). Close-up of a scratch and bruise on a man's arm from an injury that occurred that day. Blood from the fresh scratch (centre) appears sticky and is in the process of clotting (solidifying). The clot seals the damaged skin to keep blood loss to a minimum. The skin below the scratch has suffered from a blunt injury causing a bruise. This breakage of the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) in the skin has caused the faint pink and blue discoloration under the skin. At right is a healed scratch which occurred earlier and has formed a scab. (See photo numbers M330/669-M330/674 for progression of the scratch and bruise through to day 7).
