In fact, what the bicycle manufactur-er has to do for his own rear hub, the Brown-Lipe Gear Co. has to do for all of the hundredsof kinds of bicycles made. The possibility offitting all makes of wheels without necessi-tating any alteration of the latter is the resultof exact calculation and a perfect system ofconstruction. The company makes nothing else in the bicy-cle line at its factory in Syracuse, and itschangeable gear, which is now thoroughlywell known, is entering upon its fourth year inthe market. NEVER SUIT. There are two things that its never safefor one woman to recommend to another—abicycle and a Brown-Lpe Bi-Gear Parts. The rider whose wheel causes him to goto the repairer often gets broken at last spoke flanges, conveying the oil into a brasstube surrounding the axle, and thence directlyupon the balls. Another most important im-provement is the different construction of theaxle. Last season the stationary cone in theaxle and locking lugs were made in one pieceand slipped on over the axle. The conse-quence was that when the cone was sufficient-ly tempered to stand the wear, the lockinglugs were made too hard and occasionallywere brittle. This was found to be the onlyweak spot in the gear, though it was rarelythat one of these lugs were broken. For 97the lugs will be made a part of the axle, out oftool steel. The cone alone will be made sepa-rate, so that it may be hardened to any de-gree necessary. The shape of the step endof the hub has been altered by making theedge square instead of round or improving its looks. The pr
