Dermatographism. \Allergy\" written on a man's back in urticaria: raised, itchy skin. Dermatographism is a condition in which the skin is hyper- sensitive to touch. Merely brushing the skin leads to a reaction. Normally this sort of allergic response is only associated with external irritants such as nettles, insect bites or certain foods or drugs. In dermatographism, however, practically any object can evoke a response. To demonstrate this, an instrument was used to write on the skin of this patient. Dermatographism has no known cause. Treatment is with antihistamines, which help reduce the inflammation."
