At the time when they fii^st ai^pear*iiihistory, they were not yet known by any name commonto them all, each tribe having it« own special name; andit was not till between 800 and 700 years , that thename Hellenes was applied to the whole nation, extend-ing from the Cambunian mountains in the north to thesouthern extremity, and over the adjacent islands. Inthe earliest times the gi^ater part of the country wasinhabited by a race called the Pelasgimis^ of whom a greatdeal has been ^^^:•itten, but very little is known. It is cer-tain, however, that they were not materially different fromthe Hellenes, and belonged to the same race as they, forin the course of time, and without any wars or violent,commotions, we find them unite
