Chesapeake is one of the most promising of the new straw- berries. It has several distinctive characters, chief of which are vigor and healthfulness of plants, and beauty and attractiveness of fruit. There is but little danger of frost with this variety, as the plants bloom late, a valuable consideration in some localities. The large, leafy calyx is well- colored, and adds to the attractiveness of the. 296. Chesapeake. (X%) fruit. The surface of the berries is char- acteristic of the variety, being unbroken by furrows or irregularities and unusually plump and glossy. The dark red flesh is aromatic, mildly acid, and very good to best in quality. This variety originated with J. W. Parks, Nanticoke, Maryland, about 1904. Perfect. Plants few, vigorous, usually healthy but with a tendency to mildew, productive; leaves above.
