St Severinus and Odacer painted by by O Enille. Odoacer (about 435-493) was a Germanic chieftain who served with his soldiers as mercenaries of Rome. In 476, his people, the Heruli, revolted and declared him king. Odoacer then deposed Romulus Augustulus, the last Roman emperor of the West. In this late 1800s illustration, Odoacer (center) is shown entering the small abode of the respected monk St. Severinus (right) to ask his advice and blessing.
