Serpens starbirth region. Infrared Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) image of young stars (pink) in a starbirth region in the constellation Serpens. Surrounding the stars is a nebula of gas and dust that may eventually form planets or more stars. The green colour indicates the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a byproduct of burnt carbon. The blue stars are the background stars of the Milky Way galaxy. This starbirth region is around 848 light years from Earth.
