One hundred and forty-seven were enlisted from among the townsmen, and went intothe service. Thirty died in it; a few died from diseasecontracted while in the service after their return home. His grandfather, Daniel Bryant, was a soldier of the Revo-lution, born and died in Saco, Me. William M. Brvant, hisfather, served for a time in the war of 1812. Having by hardwork acquired a fair education in the common school.^, with afew terms at the Saco Academy, he engaged in teaching at anearly age. He also became a minister of the gosperin theChristian connection, preaching as an evangelist in manvplaces in Maine, New Hampshire, and Masfachusett;^. and afew years as a settled pastor. He took an active part in publicaffairs, and was for many years an officer of the town of Kenne-bunk, serving as treasurer, school committee-man, selectman,and representative to the Legislature.
