Torre Abbey is the oldest building in Torquay, dating back to 1196. The Cary family remodelled it as a Georgian mansion during the 18th century, though many of the original walls remain. The 14th Century Mohun gatehouse has survived as has the 13th Century Spanish barn, so named after it was used to detain 400 Spanish Armada prisoners in 1588. The Abbey houses many collections including fine art, silver and porcelain. It is home to the Agatha Christie Memorial Room, which features her typewriter and a hand written manuscript.
