Lanthanum hexaboride crystal. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a crystal of the ceramic material lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6), from an old electron gun. Electron guns are components that produce electron beams for use in devices such as electron microscopes and particle accelerators. LaB6 is an inorganic chemical and has a very low work function (about eV), which means it takes very little energy to remove electrons from its surface. Magnification: x402 when printed 10 centimetres high.
