This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Martian rover tests on sandy beach. Rover navigation software being tested with 212 cardboard 'rocks' on a sandy beach. This test is being conducted by the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Networking/Partnering Initiative and Planetary Robotics Laboratory. One software programme matches landmarks on the ground to images acquired from orbit (here, using an overhead drone). The other software programme applies lidar (the laser equivalent of radar) to help track the rover's motion. Photographed on 26 November 2015, at Katwijk beach, close to ESA's ESTEC technical centre in the Netherlands.
