The Warner tract embraced a large por-tion ofwdiat is now Shirleysburg borough, and the.•-^harrar tract lay west of the borough, while the(aidthers tract lay southwest of the borough. JohnLutz subsei|Uently owned four hundred acres aroundthe north and northwest of Shirleysburg. For theabove early settlers we are indebted to Mrs. Ramsey,of Shirleysburg, who was born in 1802, and is agranddaughter of Joseph SHIRLEY TOWNSHIP. Among the other early settlers of Shirley townshipmay be mentioned Revs. Christian Long and PeterLong, who were Dunkard preachers, also Rev. Chris-tian Long, Jr., David Long, Abram Long, Sr., theBaker, King, and Galbraith families. Henry Osiellived below Mount Union, near what is known as theKnox bridge, so named from the fact of Mr. Knoxbeing killed at that place. Peggy MeCracken, JohnSwoope, and Joshua Wheeler also lived in that partof the township. Col. Postlethwaite was one of the early settlers andland-owners at Mount Union. Pie lived nearly oppo-site where the tannery is located. William Morriswas the pioneer settler on the creek in the north partof tlie township. He built a mill and log housenear where the old Shaver stone house now Campbell settled along the river below MountUnion in 1790, and Geprge Vanzant lived in 1790where Peter Shaver now lives.
