Giant chromosome. Computer-enhanced light micrograph of a giant (polytene) chromosome of a lampbrush bivalent newt, Notophthalmus viridescens. Chromosomes are present in the nucleus of all plant and animal cells. They contain the sequences of genes which govern inherited characteristics. The giant chromosome of the newt is enlarged by repeated replications (polyteny). They are much bigger than any human chromosomes, so they are much easier to study. Scientists can study giant chromosomes such as this, and relate their findings to human chromosomes. Magnification: x100 at 5x7cm size.
