This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Tonga, satellite image. This is the main island of Tongatapu, which together with nearby smaller islands makes up the archipelago of the Kingdom of Tonga in the southern Pacific Ocean. Around 70 percent of Tonga's population live on Tongatapu. The capital, Nuku'alofa (centre), is on the island's northern coast, on the shores of the Fanga'uta Lagoon. The island consists of limestone covered by fertile volcanic soils. The other main features are extensive farms and fields, coastal mangrove swamps, and coral reefs to the north of the island. Satellite images such as these are being used to monitor the extent of coral reef bleaching due to climate change. This image shows an area around 40 kilometres across. Image data obtained by the Sentinel-2A satellite on 23 May 2016.
