X-ray of the abdomen of a patient that has an obstructed small intestine due to a congenital (present from birth) deformity of the mesentery. A barium meal (white) was given prior to the x-ray and allows the obstruction (centre) to be seen. The mesentery is the membranous tissue that connects the intestine to the abdominal wall and supplies it with blood. Here the secondary attachments between the intestine and abdominal wall are absent, a condition known as mesenterium commune. As a consequence of this the intestine has become twisted and obstructed.
