The post is of rectangular box form, and is tapered to pro-vide an ample base. The saddle carrying the earm trunnions isextra long and rigid, and is elevated with a screw. The arm ings to take care of tlie thrust in either direction. The spindleproper, c, extends down through the head and is driven by meansof a long sleeve, d, which in turn drives the feed mechanismfrom the lower end. The drive is accomplished by means of apair of bevel gears, c, which are arranged to be clutched to thespindle, providing in this way a tapping attachment and at thesame time a stop motion for the spindle when the clutch is inthe intermediate position. The method of keying this clutchspindle to the driving sleeve is unusual in that it is accomplishedby means of three lines of balls, /, mounted in ball cases and. Horizontal Section Through Head of the Ne traveling in hardened steel races, providing a clutch spline whichmoves practically without friction; it is therefore possible tostart, stop or reverse the spindle with a minimum of etTort onthe part of the operator. The back gears are carried in two nests, one on each side ofthe spindle and in enclosed oil tight case, thus providing a bal-anced head. The back gear is thrown by rneans of a lever onthe front of the machine and is arranged to lock in either higiior low position. The gearing and all bearings are oiled fromthe outside by means of sight feed cups. The bevel gears areall provided with ball thrusts and the bearings are bronzebushed. The gears themselves are alternately steel and bronze. The machine is provided with six changes of feed by meansof a sliding key, and also by a quick and slow hand ; the S12 RAILWAY AGE GAZETTE, MECHANICAL EDITION. Vol. 87, No. 9. quick feed is provided for by a large hand wheel directly on thefeed s
