Evening, at 8 went to Wall Street, and there encountering Mr [John B.] Holmes & [Frederick] Gleason walked with the former to the Fulton ferry, crossed to Brooklyn, to this boarding house in Washington Street. A spacious corner house, trees about; a flight of steps from the little garden to the door. Inside, a wide hall & staircase; drawing room, well carpeted, paintings, a piano and music. Saw the proprietress, a stout, [words crossed out] looking dame. Ascended, & concluded to come there on Friday night; sat awhile with Holmes, then returned, straw hat buying on the way. And this day is Mary [Bilton] ?s birth day. I ought to pen the name No More, now. 11. Wednesday. To Washington Market, and selecting a busy part, there stood sketching the butchers stalls & appurtenanees, to the infinite admiration and respect of their proprietors. Many were the boys inquiries, and much there interest in seeing that transferred to paper which they were wont to regard as so common place. ?ǣWhen ?s the paper comin out Sir In about a fortnight. ?ǣBy [word crossed out].
