Steele, he prepared a series of school his-tories known as the Barness Brief Histories, sonamed from their publishers, A. S. Barnes & set comprised a History of the United States,an Ancient Mediseval and Modern History, a History of France,and a large Popular Historyof the United States. These histories met witheven more favor than his scientific works, and it isclaimed his Barness Brief History of the UnitedStates has had a larger sale than any other historicaltext-book ever published in this country. He be-queathed $50,000 to Syracuse University to found aprofessorship which bears the name of the Steelechair of theistic science. In 1870 he received thedegree of from the regents of the Universityof the state of New York, and in 1872 was electedFellow of the Geological society of London.
