Gastrotrichan worm. Light micrograph of a gastrotrichan worm. Gastrotrichans are minute, unsegmented fresh-water and marine worms which swim by means of hair-like cilia on their surface. They are hermaphrodite and are probably related to the rotifers and roundworms. They are elongated, flattened and rarely longer than 1 millimetre. The body surface is covered with an external layer which can form plates, bristles and spines. Most gastrotrichans possess glands that make a sticky fluid that used for attaching the organism to objects. Gastrotrichans feed on algae, bacteria and protozoans. Magnification: x70 at 35mm size.
