A horse waits for its rider on the main street of Tangkor. Situated on the vast grasslands of Aba, Tangkor is true nomad's land; the town, once derelict and used only for nomads restocking on essential items, is now in the midst of being rebuilt. Recreated to house office buildings for government officials and acres of relocation houses, Tangkor has been brought under the Chinese government's 'Go West' initiative to develop the country's hinterland. The scheme includes relocating the nomads off their traditional grazing lands and into the outskirts of cities to become industrial workers. For many of China's nomads, the motorbike is the new horse.
