He was captured by the Union forces,at Hatchers, in front of Petersburg, justprior to Lees surrender. After peace was declared he returned homeand resumed his business. In 1866 he marriedMary S. Owen, a daughter of Rev. RichardOwen, a Baptist clergyman of Clinton, Ten-nessee. Mrs. Hardin was born in Tennessee,and has borne her husband nine children,namely: James L., Katie S., Mattie G.,Richard O., Pearl L., Minnie, Robert M.,Wennel and Harry Houston. In 1870 Mr. Hardin came to Californiaand located at HoUister, his present home,where he owns a fertile farm of eighty-sixacres as a homestead, and also owns 640acres of land in Fresno county. He is aKnight Templar and an active member of theA. O. U. W. fA. STEINBECK, a well-known citizenof HoUister, is a native of Germany,^ liaving been born there November27, 1832.
