Thisemigration accounts in large measure for the slew increase of thepopulation, though there has also been a slight decrease in thebirth-rate. The population was long entirely confined to thesouthern and eastern sections of the province, which comprisean area of about 33,000 sq. m.; but in these districts it is nowstationary or decreasing, whereas the northern and westernportions are filling up rapidly. Toronto, the provincial capital,has grown from 59,000 in 1S71 to about 300,000, partly throughthe absorption of neighbouring towns and villages. Other. ONTARIO 5 important cities are Ottawa (the capital of the Dominion)(59,928 in 1901), Hamilton (52,634), London (37,981), Kingston(17,961). The number of males slightly exceeds that of population is chiefly of British descent, though in theeastern counties numerous French Canadians are flocking infrom Quebec and in some instances by purchase of farms replacingthe British. There are also about 20,000 Indians, many ofwhom are civilized, enjoy the franchise and are enrolled in theDominion militia. There is no state Church, though buildingsdevoted to religious purposes are almost wholly exempt frommunicipal taxation. The Methodists are, numerically, thestrongest religious body, then come Presbyterians, RomanCatholics and Anglicans, in the order named.
