YUGOSLAVIA:Shows Italian Istria & Zara/Zadar;Free State of Fiume/Rijeka 1924 map

Artist/engraver/cartographer: John Bartholomew . Provenance: "The Citizen's Atlas of the World"; Edited by John Bartholomew, Published by John Bartholomew, Edinburgh; Fourth Edition. Type: Vintage colour map; Scale 1:2,000,000. This map was originally printed on two separate sheets which have been joined together to form a single map. The Free State of Fiume was an independent free state which existed between 1920 and 1924. Its territory of 28 km2 (11 sq mi) comprised the city of Fiume (now in Croatia and, since the end of World War II, known as Rijeka) and rural areas to its north, with a corridor to its west connecting it to Italy. Lagosta (Lastovo) is shown as belonging to Italy. On 11 November 1918 Italian troops took possession of the island based on the 1915 Secret Treaty of London, which allocated much of Dalmatia to Italy upon Italy entering the war on the side of the Triple Alliance. The Italians based their claim upon the presence of ethnic Italians in all parts of maritime Dalmatia. However, President Woodrow Wilson, who was a supporter of the nationality principle, blocked the allocation. As a consequence, under the Rapallo agreement of 1920, Italy only got Zara (today Zadar), due to its Italian majority, and Lagosta. On September 8, 1943, after the declaration of the Armistice with Italy, Josip Broz Tito's Partisans took over the island, incorporating it into Yugoslavia. Lastovo became a part of the People's Republic of Croatia in 1945.
