Intestinal cell. Coloured high resolution scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an intestinal epithelial cell showing microvilli. Intestinal epithelial cells are involved in the absorption of nutrients from the gut. To increase the surface area available for absorption each cell is covered in thousands of finger-like projections called microvilli (blue). Within the cell cytoplasm (green) are mitochondria (red). The inner membrane of each mitochondrion is folded into projections called christae. Mitochondria are the sites of energy production in the cell. Magnification unknown.
