Dinslaken, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Emscher estuary into the Rhine. Cyclists take a break at the lookout point. On the right is the disused STEAG coal-fired power station at Voerde. The Emscher's mouth into the Rhine is being moved from Dinslaken to Voerde, about 500 metres to the north. Fish will then be able to swim barrier-free up the new Emscher from the Rhine through a newly created floodplain. Following the construction of a parallel sewer, the Emscher will be completely free of sewage from January 2022. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
