Thecable is IJ^ inch, Lang lay, 6 pieces of 19 strands eachover a hemp core, and was made by the John A. Roeb-ling Company. The cable tension device is one of the most interestingfeatures of the whole plant. It is the design of W. , chief engineer of the road, and was designedespecially with a view to remedy the surging of the carsby means of an automatic variation of the tension. It wastried on the Seventh street road for several months withentire success, and all three of the cables in the newpower house are fitted with it. The tension carriage isalso Mr. Uptons design. The principle of the device is a weight, suspended be-tween lever arms, in such a way as to bring the tension. NAVY YARD CAR HOUSE- Kansas City, consulting engineer, and the constructionwas carried out under the supervision of D. S. Carll, erecting engineer. The driving plants for the three cables at the powerhouse are entirely independent, and by means of frictionclutches any cable may be operated by either of theengines without regard to the others. The total lengthof the 15 inch drum-shafting is 95 feet. The cabledrums are 14 feet in diameter, fitted with Walker differ-ential rims, which, in the Seventh street power house, have given wonderful service, and after two years wearwere measured but a short time ago and failed to show awear of 1-32 of an inch. The cable drums are of 6grooves each and are both operated by a rope drive, anentirely new departure in cable construction. Thepulleys on the line shaft are 9 feet 8^ inches, and thoseon the drum shaft are 26. On the West Avenue andFourteenth street sections the line shaft drums have 7 •CAPACllY 250 CARS. heavi
