An ordinary plain portion is formed at the back or rear of theleg, and is continued in the heel, the bottom of the foot, and in thetoe portions of the stocking. A stocking having sections of lace work alternating with sections of plain knitting around the entire leg,such as here shown (Fig. 172), may bemade as follows: Starting at the plain section, thethread forms a straight cross-thread eto the next plain section, crossing thespace of one or more plain loops.
