Sebaceous cyst and inguinal hernia of an 86-year- old man. A sebaceous cyst (centre) is a large, smooth nodule containing a yellow fluid called sebum. Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands in the skin. If sebum blocks a gland, a cyst forms. The cyst is sitting on top of an inguinal (groin) hernia. This type of hernia arises when part of the bowel bulges throught the lower abdominal wall. It is most common in men, where the bowel pushes through the inguinal canal. This is an opening connecting the abdominal cavity with the scrotum, through which the testes descend. Surgery can be used to treat both conditions.
