This sculpture by the Italian sculptor painter Michelangelo (1475-1564) is titled Pieta. The Italian sculptor, painter, and architect Michelangelo carved Christ lying in the arms of his mother Mary just after the crucifixion. One of his two best known works (the other is David), it was completed in 1499. It is now housed in the Vatican Museum. The photo dates to 1964.
