Umberto I of Italy. 1876 illustration of the King of Italy Umberto I (1844-1900). Umberto I ruled Italy from 9th January 1878 until his assassination in 1900. Umberto's reign saw Italy attempt colonial expansion into the Horn of Africa, successfully gaining Eritrea and Somalia despite being defeated by Abyssinia at the Battle of Adowa in 1896. In 1882, he approved the Triple Alliance with the German Empire and Austria-Hungary. He was shot four times by Italo-American anarchist Gaetano Bresci in Monza on 29th July 1900 who claimed he wanted to avenge the people killed in Milan during the suppression of the riots of May 1898.
