FROM STAGE COACH TO STEEL PASSENGER TRAIN A VISIT WITH JUDGE GEPHART. OF CUMBERLAND, Walter Coon ONE MIGHT almost imagine himself back in stagecoach days, during a quiet evening with JudgeOliver C. Gephart of Cumberland, Md., the oldestsurviving railroad ticket agent in the United Gephart was ticket agent for the Baltimore andOhio before the Civil War. He is ninety-four years of agebut his step is still that of a young man, his eye brightand his memory unusually strong and active. He canrecall, without hesitation, events occurring seventy-fiveor eighty years ago. In his youth portraits were paintedon ivory and later came the slow process of the daguerro-type. He has lived through the entire development ofphotography and the comparatively new art of photo-engraving makes it possible to reproduce this portrait ofhis later years which was taken in his home. Judge Gephart has kept pace with the activities ofmodern life, yet the visitor feels, at times, as though hewere
