Themaximum rise in voltage when full non-inductive load is thrownoff, is 8 per cent, the speed and excitation remaining 10-kw direct-driven motor-generator set furnishes the neces-sary current for exciting the generator. This is located nearthe west wall of the building. A quarter-phase induction mo-tor drives the 125-volt, four-pole dynamo. In starting theplant, current for the induction motor is obtained from theCherry Street station, over the wires which are also used forlighting the engine and boiler room. This current, at 2300volts and 60 cycles, is stepped down to 220 volts by means oftwo single-phase type H transformers placed in the FIG. VACUUM PUMP The switchboard (Fig. 15), all the apparatus of which is ofthe General Electric make, and which is shown in the accom-panying engraving, contains three panels of blue Vermontmarble. The one on the left is mounted with the necessary in-struments and switches of the motor-generator set. The cen-tral panel controls the generator, while the one on the right isfor the load. The exciter panel carries a 25-amp. Thomsonastatic ammeter, a 2500-volt oil switch and an overload relay. 191 A 15-amp. Thomson recording wattmeter mounted on the backof the board measures the energy input of the exciter set. Onthe generator panel is mounted a 300-amp, two-pole, single-throw knife switch, a 175-volt Thomson astatic voltmeter anda 400-amp. ammeter. The load panel is equipped with an over-load relay, a 300-amp. type F, four-pole oil switch, power factorammeter, indicating wattmeter, and two 200-amp. ammeters, one in each phase. A 150-amp. recording wattmeter measuresthe total outpu
