At onetime the rebel line of battle, carrying several battle flags, werewithin talking distance, and although the whole of his colorguard was swept away, and for a while he stood alone amid thedead and Avounded, under a tremendous fire from ten times thenumber of the Union forces, still he remained where he had beenplaced bv his colonel as steadily and l)ravely as though on parade,encouraging and begging the men not to fall back until victoryfinallv resulted. R., and served as a member of theBoard of County Commissioners from 1886 to 1889, since whichtime he has been connected with the revenue and postal depart-ment of the government.
