Farmer Andrew Elms is harvesting his five acres of lavender this week at Lordington near Chichester in West Sussex The crop will produce about 40 litres of pure lavender oil Mr Elms gave up dairy farming because of falling milk prices and turned his land into the only lavender farm in Sussex using Mailette plants from Provence in the south of France which have thrived in the baking heat this summer
