C, which church he had served once before. He was born in Saluda county, S. C, January 25, 1862,and died at High Point, N. C, October 9. 1934, at theage of 72 years, 8 months, and 9 days. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Lilla Vansant,of Saluda county, S. C, and their six children, Rev. EarlK. Bodie, of Wilmington, N. C, Mrs. John S. Brown,Miss Winifred, Ralph, Cromer and Vansant. He was buried at Union Church, following a service inthe Lutheran church at High Point. The service wasconducted by Rev. F. L. Rufus Benton Peery, , Dr. Peery was a native of the famous Burkes Garden,Virginia, having been born there April 8, 1868. His deathoccurred at Raleigh, North Carolina, October 25, 1934. He had been missionary, educator and pastor, and in allthese fields of service he ranked high. He was scholarlyand a preacher of ability and power. He was the secondmissionary of the Lutheran Church to go to Japan andwas largely instrumental in the establishment of the Lu-theran Church in that country. In addition to his workof eleven years as missionary he served as pastor, teacher,and college president in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Illinois,Ohio, and North Carolina. Dr. Peery was educated at Roanoke College, from whichhe graduated in 1890. He received the degree of Doctorof Philosophy from Gettysburg College and that of Doctorof Divinity from Midland College.
