Cancer research. Light micrograph of cancerous cells displaying a glow due to an electrophoresis effect (the comet effect). This shows that the cellular DNA (genetic material) has been damaged. The cells were grown in culture in the laboratory and exposed to cancer-causing chemicals to study the causes of cancer. Photographed in the Health and Pollutants Laboratory of the INRS (the French National Institute of Research and Safety), Nancy, France. Tests are carried out here to establish the toxicity and cancer-causing properties of different materials, chemicals and pollutants.
