Carilef s cathedral originallyterminated in an apse, in the centre of which was Cuthberts shrine. This having become ruinous, the present NineAltars Chapel was commencedin 1242, so named from the ninebays of its eastern fagade, eachof which contained an altar. Thissing-ularly beautiful structure isthe only post-Norman portion ofthe cathedral, and is a specimenof the highest perfection of theEarly English
