The High School MagazineMontreal, Canada . n the army andgood sergeants are a lot scarcer than goodofficers. Whats more thay have a muchbetter time. I saw Frank Fortier at Shorncliffe. Colonel Meighen has arrivedhere now and has taken over command of the14th Brigade. The troops in this command are camps are good and the men are verywell fed in England, much better than theywere in Canada. I say this last from personalexperience. Of course the branch of service that I knowthe most about is the one of which I am ahumble member, namely the pay branch. I hardly think that an outsider can readilyappreciate the amount of work involved inlooking after the pay of approximately 100,000men. The head office, as it were, of the PayDepartment is in London, nearly opposite theHouses of Parliament, and in this office, which THE HICxH SCHOOL MAGAZINE 15. Lieut. Shirlev G. Dixon. Office. comprises the Record Office as well, are aboutone thousand men. Col. J. G. Ross is at the head of this organ-ization. I am not perfectly sure, but I thinkI am correct when 1 say that he is an old Highboy. Then, working under the Chief Paymasterare the Divisional Paymasters and their As-sistants at Shorncliffe, and at Bramshott andin France. I have heard the Pay Department describedas an institution founded for the express pur-pose of keeping money from the people v\ ho areentitled to it. but considering the numbers andthe difficulties that it is up against. I thinkthat Col. Ross and those working under himare most successful in getting the money tothose that are entitled to it. I dont imagine that much that 1 have saidwill be of interest to the school, but. as I saidbefore. 1 am in more or less of a back water ofthe w ar and I hav e not seen the real thing. I am. vours very sincerely. SHIRLEY
