There are 15 natural gas wells in the city, pro-ducing from 25,000 to 100,000 cubic feet each is one under the Court House and two at theInsane Asylum. There are five banks, a splendid schoolsystem, and several first-class hotels, Imperial and Yosemite, that go to make up a thriving and prosper-ous city. In the business district are many substantialbuilding blocks, showing permanence and stability. The County Court House (1890) occupies a prominentsite in the center of the city; it is of California granite,. TO CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. 149 and cost 1366,000. A grand view is to be had of thecity and surrounding country from the dome (get key atelevator). The two cannon guarding the approach tothe Court House, formed part of Commodore Stocktonsarmament in 1846. The Hazelton Free PubHc Library is a handsomebuilding, constructed of California marble, at a cost off 100,000. It holds 35,000 volumes. The State Insane Asylum is located in the suburbs,and covers 100 acres of ground, beautifully laid out ingardens, lawns, and sidewalks (take North Californiastreet-cars). These cars also take you to St. JosephsHome for aged males, the Rural Cemetery, and to Good-water Grove, a place of resort. On opposite side ofthe city are the Hot Mineral Baths, tub and tank; thesewaters are famous for their medicinal properties, beingexcellent for rheumatism. Stockton is the starting-point for camping trips
