WILLIAM McDEVITT, chief of theelectrical depariment of the Phia-dephia Fire Underwriters As-ocia-tion, recently gave a demonstration of someof the ways in which fires may be caused byelectricity. The first danger was that aris-ing from the common practice of groundingtelephone wires on gas pipe. A bad connec-tion is generally made—quite sufficient fortelephone purposes—and then if the tele-phone wire becomes crossed with an elec-tric light wire the larger current, meetingresistance at the ground connection, heatsthe joint, punches a hole in the gas pipe andthe arc formed lights the gas. Mr. Mc-Devitt gave a complete demonstration ofthe gas and insulation on the wire burn-ing simultaneously. He also exhibited asection of gas pipe that had caused a fire injust this way. The wires in the sockets ofelectric lamps are liable
