At birth the greater part ofthe acetabulum, the crest of the ilium, the tuberosity and ramus of the ischium, the body andinferior ramus of the pubis are still cartilaginous ; ossification from the three primary centreslias however extended into the margin of the acetabulum. In the 7th or 8th year the rami of. Fi£ 158.—Acetabular region of the hip-bone AT 14 TEAKS of AGE. (G. D. In the acetabulum the three parts arestill separated by a Y-shaped strip of cartilage, which is continuous with that lining the cartilage begins to be ossified from severalcentres about the 12th year. The most constant ofthese gives rise to a triangular piece of bone at thefore part of the acetabulum, which is known asthe OS accfnhuli} and forms the whole of the so-called pubic portion of the articular cavity. Itbecomes united first with the pubis, and later withthe ilium and ischium. Between the ilium andischium there are only some irregular nodules of bone, and other small osseous points form amore or less perfect lamina over the iliac and ischial portions of the articula
